Dive into Latin Poetry!
Latin poetry is glorious! But it is not very like English poetry. So different are the quantitative meters native to Latin from the accentual meters of English that it can almost seem like a category error to call them both poetry. As a result, our experience with English poetry provides little preparation for encountering Latin poetry.
And yet very little instruction on Latin poetry, aside from The Aeneid, is available outside of Classics programs. This intensive seminar aims to address this, providing you with a chance to dive deeper into the workings of Latin poetry.
This seminar will explore different meters across a variety of authors from throughout the history of the language, and will explore the relation between form and content, and how this relationship contributes to deepening meaning. You will also develop in your ability to scan a text at sight.
The most powerful writing and the most fascinating uses of a language happen in its poetry. Are you ready to explore what Latin's poetry has to offer?
